Large leaved evergreen magnolia from China with fragrant flowers in summer.

Named after and discovered by the famous French missionary Pere Jean Delavayi and introduced by E. Wilson. Perhaps best sited on a west or south wall but in milder localities it can also make an impressive free standing tree. Huge buds burst open in the evening into large exotically fragrant creamy-white flowers. This magnolia is often noted for its suitability for alkaline soils but in all honesty this applies to most.
