My stock goes back to my childhood when at the age of 11 i purchased dried bulbs along with Narcissus ‘hispanica’, N. triandrus & Cyclamen purpurascens from my local garden centre (all presumably wild dug, perhaps by the same lot that sent us the tortoises?!). My parents garden was acidic, dry, nutrient poor plateau sands and gravels in the mild New Forest and G. ikariae thrived! Today i grow it in chalky loam in a frost pocket and it still thrives. Flowers open later than those of the superficially similar G. woronowii and are larger, the whole plant having a poise that sets it apart. February-March.
