This is a very rare and possibly declining native shrub that rarely succeeds in gardens away from alkaline or rich fertile soils. Beautiful scented red-purple flowers on bare branches in February and March followed by scarlet translucent fruits. Like all daphnes the plant is toxic if eaten but when did you last hear of someone stupid enough to try?  The flowers provide a rich source of food for early pollinating insects such as bumble bees and the fruit is popular with finches.
