Hybrid between the American C. bignonioides and the Chinese C. ovata. The large heart shaped green leaves emerge dark-purple before fading to green giving a pleasing contrast between the two stages of growth. Big panicles of creamy flowers with yellow and purple markings open in July and are popular with honey bees. Forms a medium tree up to about 5m but can be cut back hard every few years as a foliage plant. Best on fertile soils in sun or very light shade.
